Music, magic, puppeteers and more free with admission at Tulare County Fair

TULARE – The 2014 Tulare County Fair, Sept. 10-14, offers a reduced admission cost and much more free entertainment for fairgoers of all ages.

Let’s Pretend Circus, presented multiple times daily, allows children to become tightrope walkers, wild animals, an animal trainer or a clown for a live theater experience designed to build confidence and creativity.

Walk on the Wild Side is an exhibit of exotic animals presented by a nonprofit animal refuge in Oregon. The exhibit will include a baby lion.

Procrastinators is an ensemble of drummers who turn five-gallon water jugs, stools and pots and pans into musical instruments as they jump, slide, twist and stomp through fast and furious rhythmic fun.

Paint Downtown Hanford Pink September 4th

Paint Downtown Hanford Pink September 4th

The community is invited to help Adventist Health / Breast Care Center “Paint Downtown Pink” during the Thursday Night Market Place on Thursday, Sept. 4.

Everyone is welcome to wear pink and participate in a contest to win prizes and fitness items.

To promote physical activity, contestants will sign up at the Adventist Health booth to receive a pink pedometer. Then, they will be asked to walk for breast cancer awareness by completing 2,500 steps around the Market Place (about a mile and a quarter). Once completed, participants will receive a free gift while supplies last, and will be entered into a drawing to win larger prizes.

Prizes will also be given to the top three Market Place booths displaying pink pride. Meanwhile, the Adventist Health booth will have a fun Facebook photo booth with wacky pink props for walk participants. Images from the photo booth will be posted on the Adventist Health / Central Valley Network page the following day.

Vislaia CHP Looking For Volunteers

The Visalia office of the California Highway Patrol is looking for a few good men and woman willing to give something back to their community.

The CHP’s Senior Volunteer Program has begun recruiting people 55 and older who will contribute a minimum of four hours a week in the Visalia area office.

Capt. Steve Sullivan, commander of the Visalia CHP area, said he is seeking to add new energetic volunteers to the current group.

“I’m looking for (high) quality, motivated individuals with the spirit of volunteerism…who want to effect positive change in the community,” Sullivan said.

The volunteers perform administrative functions, such as filing and answering phones, and also work at community events, direct traffic and drive CHP cars to set up radar trailers. They also occasionally ride along with officers, serving as an extra set of eyes in search of speeders and cell phone violators.
