AgVenture Day May 31st!

International Agri-Center’s AgVentures! Learning Center, the Tulare County Farm Bureau and UC Cooperative Extension are partnering to bring AgVenture Day! an education enrichment program for 4th graders from Tulare and Visalia city schools to explore farming, food and fun.

 

The first AgVenture Day! will take place on Friday, May 31, from 9:30am to 1:30pm at the International Agri-Center at 4500 S. Laspina Street in Tulare.

 

This event will educate students on our abundant agricultural industry, teach them to make healthy food choices and open students’ eyes to how their food is produced in Tulare County.

Slick Rock Student Film Festival This Saturday
The 10th annual Slick Rock Student Film Festival – Central California’s largest student film competition – is scheduled for Saturday, May 18 at the Fox Theatre in downtown Visalia. This year, the festival received 192 films, representing the work of over 380 students. The high school films receiving a “Premiere Cut” designation will be screened at the theater beginning at 9:00 a.m. Saturday morning. A screening schedule will available at www.SlickRockFestival.org on Thursday, May 16. At 5:30 p.m., students who played a central role in producing "Premiere Cut" films (along with their advisors) are eligible to participate in the Limo/Red Carpet Walk. The awards ceremony will begin at 7:00 p.m.

Tulare County Native to Share Book, Immigrant Story in Porterville

Porterville College’s Cultural Historical Awareness Program (C.H.A.P.) will host it's final event of the school year featuring professor and author, Anthony Barcellos from 7-8 p.m. May 3 in the Porterville College Theater.

The talk is titled "Land of Milk and Money" and details the story of the Francisco family, Portuguese immigrants from the Azores who settled on a Central Valley Dairy Farm.

Barcellos teaches math at American River College in Sacramento and lives in Davis, California. He is a native of the Central Valley in California, having grown up on his grandfather's dairy farm in Porterville, Tulare County.

His first language is Portuguese. 'Land of Milk and Money' is his first novel about his Portuguese American family in Tulare County.

Theatre Company's Performances of "Britain on Broadway"

The Tulare County Office of Education’s Theatre Company will present its spring performance recital entitled "Britain on Broadway" April 25-27. The production will feature selections for classic musicals set in England, including Mary Poppins, Jekyll & Hyde, Oliver!, Sweeney Todd, Monty Python’s Spamalot, My Fair Lady and The Secret Garden.

Theatre Company vocal coach and production director Charlotte Garcia reports that she scripted the selections from the beloved British musicals, “so that the many different characters’ stories intertwine or connect to one another by location, subject matter or a common character.”

The Tulare County Office of Education is preparing for the 10th annual Slick Rock Student Film Festival – Central California’s largest student film competition. The deadline for students to submit their films is Monday, April 15. Middle and high school students in the seven South Central Valley counties of Fresno, Kern, Kings, Madera, Mariposa, Merced and Tulare are eligible to compete in the festival. Instructions for uploading films can be found at www.slickrockfestival.org.

Three Rivers Music Festival This May!

The second annual Three Rivers Music Festival will feature over a dozen music artists from the Valley and beyond to benefit the 501 (c) (3) Emergency Aid Alliance. The festival will be held at the Lion’s Roping Arena in Three Rivers, California, on May 4 from 11 am to 10 pm.

All proceeds from Americana music festival will go toward supporting local residents suffering from extreme hardship due to health, age, and emergencies.

“It’s the parent who quits working to care for a terminally ill child, the neighbor who cannot afford propane to heat his home,” EAA director Janene Lasswell said. “None of them asked for their situation. Really, none of them asked for help. But that’s what we’re here to do.”
