Parents in the South Valley have another option when it comes to Summer Camps for their kids.

The Clemmie Gill School of Science and Conservation (SCICON) is unveiling a new summer program for students entering grades 6-8. The SCICON Summer Academy will be a combination summer camp and academic experience.

SCICON is the outdoor school of science and conservation operated by Tulare County Office of Education. Each year, over 15,000 fifth- and sixth-grade students visit this 1,100-acre campus located in the foothills above Springville.

Students will be able to choose from outdoor activities including: backpacking and camping, adventure sports, nature studies and arts and crafts. In the afternoon, under the supervision of credentialed teachers, students will choose to work in one of four different academic pathways: Artists & Authors, Technology, Engineering and Museum Curators. Depending on the pathway selected, students will be involved in creating web designs, video productions, art and literature projects, robotics or researching wildlife. Evening activities will include a campfire, astronomy, skit night and a talent show.

Two week-long sessions will be offered: June 17-22 and June 24-29.

The price is $345.

Rates for the week-long Summer Academy are around $500. This cost includes lodging in SCICON’s student cabins and all meals. Registration is limited to 80 students per session.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for students to experience in-depth academic studies in art, literature, science or technology, combined with all the wonderful outdoor activities SCICON has to offer,” says SCICON Director Rick Mitchell. “It’s a great combination of physical activity and academic enrichment.”

For parents interested in learning more about the SCICON Summer Academy, Director Rick Mitchell and staff members will hold two information meetings this month:
