Kaweah Delta to Honor Top Docs and Nurses

As part of Kaweah Delta Health Care District’s nurse week celebration (May 6-12), Kaweah Delta will honor its top nurses and its physician of the year on Thursday, May 9, in Visalia.

 

The ceremony will begin at 7 p.m. at the Visalia Fox Theatre, 308 W. Main St. Those who be honored include:

 

Physician of the Year – Nadia Lupercio, M.D.

Nadia Lupercio, M.D., is an internal medicine physician at Kaweah Delta Medical Center. She is a graduate of Ross University and completed her residency at Albany Medical Center (Albany, New York). She is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine. She has been named Physician of the Year by Kaweah Delta Health Care District’s Professional Practice Council, which is made up of staff nurses representing every area of nursing in the district.

Law Day Celebration This Week in Tulare County

Tulare County District Attorney Tim Ward is inviting you to attend the Law Day Ceremony sponsored by the Tulare County Bar Association on Wednesday, May 1, 2013.

The ceremony will be held in Department number 6 of the Superior Court at 8:30 a.m. Immediately thereafter, the Office of the District Attorney will hold their annual Open House.

During the Law Day observance, Karen Cooper will be honored posthumously with the 2013 District Attorney Justice Award. The award will be accepted by her husband, Chris Cooper and her daughter, Paige Cooper.

In addition to the 2013 District Attorney Justice Award, the 2013 Liberty Bell Award will be presented by the Tulare County Bar Association.

This Saturday is the  8th annual Britanny Wilkinson United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation (UMDF) Fundraising Dinner. (KMPH FOX 26 Great Day's Kim Stephens is the night's MC.)

All are invited to this evening at Break the Barriers at 6pm. Tickets are $25 each. There is always an amazing raffle, beautiful silent auction, delicious dinner and special program learning about Brittany and the disease she lived with - a disease few still know about but 1 in every 200 people has a genetic mutation that may lead to mitochondrial disease. 

Mitochondria are in all our bodies, in our cells giving us energy. For those living with mitochondrial disease, which is genetic, that mitochondria doesn’t work right affecting the body in very painful ways.

Clovis East graduate, Brittany Wilkinson lived with this all her 18 years. Amidst her migraines and other debilitating pain, she gracefully raised awareness and funds for others living with this disease.

Mr. Leroy Bassett Sharp, Jr. of Tulare passed away unexpectedly Saturday March 2 at the age of 85. 

He was born on March 13, 1927 to Leroy & Helen Sharp, and was raised in Oakland.

He joined the Navy, serving in World War II.

He then attended UC Davis graduating with a degree in Animal Husbandry in 1950.

Mr. Sharp was a local livestock producer who owned & operated Livestock Systems Management, Sharp Energy, Royal Farms, Sharp Brothers Inc.

Tulare County Students Get to “Meet the Directors”

Professional actors, directors and producers who have all recently filmed in Tulare County shared their advice with 400 students who were invited to attend the free lecture.

The presenters included Karin Schneider & Lauren Fitzgerald, the writers and producers of “RIPE.” It is a small-budget film written and produced by two women who attended local high schools and who have both pursued careers in the film industry. Students learned how they developed their story, crowd-sourced the funding to make their movie, and are now using film festivals to market RIPE.

Ian & Eshom Nelms, who wrote and directed “Lost on Purpose,” also met with students.

The Nelms brothers grew up in Woodlake and went to high school in Visalia.

After college they ended up in Santa Monica, scrambling to turn their dream of writing, directing and producing movies into a reality.

Eight-Grader Wins County Spelling Bee, Heads to Washington, D.C.

It took 11 grueling rounds, but Mitchell Miya, an eighth-grader at Pioneer Middle School in Hanford earned the title of 2013 Tulare County Spelling Bee Champion.

He won over a field of 236 tough competitors, on Wednesday, February 27th.

 Mitchell successfully spelled the word “facticide” to win the title.

Mitchell will compete in the National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. beginning May 28.

Holocaust Survivor Brings Lessons to Life in Tulare Co. Schools

The study of the World War II Holocaust will come alive for students this week, as Holocaust survivor Elane Geller visits several campuses.

She will be at Granite Hills High School for presentations at 9:45 and 6 p.m. today.

Tomorrow morning, she will be at Harmony Magnet Academy in Strathmore.

At 1:15 p.m., she will be at Strathmore High School.

 

Geller will shares her message of human dignity, compassion, and remembrance for those who gave their lives during World War II.

“You would do well to ask yourself why a sane person would relive this story about such great pain,” she tells audiences of students.  “It’s about prevention of racism and bigotry and anti-Semitism.” 

Ms. Elane Norich Geller was born in a Polish town not too far from the birthplace of the late Pope John Paul II.
