Slick Rock Student Film Festival This Saturday
The 10th annual Slick Rock Student Film Festival – Central California’s largest student film competition – is scheduled for Saturday, May 18 at the Fox Theatre in downtown Visalia. This year, the festival received 192 films, representing the work of over 380 students. The high school films receiving a “Premiere Cut” designation will be screened at the theater beginning at 9:00 a.m. Saturday morning. A screening schedule will available at www.SlickRockFestival.org on Thursday, May 16. At 5:30 p.m., students who played a central role in producing "Premiere Cut" films (along with their advisors) are eligible to participate in the Limo/Red Carpet Walk. The awards ceremony will begin at 7:00 p.m.

"Battle of the Books" Under Way in Tulare County

Tulare and Kings County middle and elementary school teams are scheduled to compete in the annual Battle of the Books event Today and May 22.

The middle school competition (open to students in grades 6-8) is scheduled for today. Together, Earlimart Middle School, Wilson Middle School (Exeter), Pixley Middle School, Waukena School (Tulare), Reagan Elementary School (Lindsay), Lakeside School (Hanford), Valley Life Charter School (Visalia), Alpaugh Middle School, George McCann Memorial Catholic School (Visalia) and Eleanor Roosevelt Community Learning Center (Visalia) are sending 20 teams and 116 students to the competition.

The upper elementary school competition (open to students in grades 4-6) is scheduled for Wednesday, May 22.

University Prep High School Wins Step-Up Youth Challenge

A team of students from University Preparatory High School (UPHS) won the “Best Overall” award in the high school portion of the annual Step Up Youth Challenge, which concluded April 25 with a red carpet awards ceremony at the Visalia Fox Theater. The UPHS students, along with teams from five other high schools and 13 middle schools, worked October through April to identify a community need and create a program to address that need.

UPHS students developed a multimedia teen pregnancy prevention program. The program, which was designed for middle school audiences, is performed on stage with a mix of video interviews with teen parents and short play vignettes. UPHS Language Arts teacher and project advisor Dr. Tara Williams said, “From my point of view, the students took a lot of initiative in putting the project together.

Tulare County Native to Share Book, Immigrant Story in Porterville

Porterville College’s Cultural Historical Awareness Program (C.H.A.P.) will host it's final event of the school year featuring professor and author, Anthony Barcellos from 7-8 p.m. May 3 in the Porterville College Theater.

The talk is titled "Land of Milk and Money" and details the story of the Francisco family, Portuguese immigrants from the Azores who settled on a Central Valley Dairy Farm.

Barcellos teaches math at American River College in Sacramento and lives in Davis, California. He is a native of the Central Valley in California, having grown up on his grandfather's dairy farm in Porterville, Tulare County.

His first language is Portuguese. 'Land of Milk and Money' is his first novel about his Portuguese American family in Tulare County.

University Preparatory High School Information Night Coming Up!

If you are considering enrolling your children in University Preparatory High School on the COS campus, here's a heads up.

The school will be holding its Information Night next week on Thursday, May 2nd.

The meeting will be held at 6 p.m. on the COS campus in the Sequoia Bldg., Room 1.

Peña Planetarium to Explore Earth, Moon and Sun

This Friday, April 26, 2013, the Peña Planetarium will focus on how the  Earth, Moon and Sun work together as a system.

You will:

  • get insight on what is the myth and science behind it.
  • learn why the sun rises and sets
  • learn why we see different constellations during different seasons
  • learn about the Moon's phases and orbit.
  • explore past and future space travel to our moon and beyond.

The program gets under way at 7:00 p.m. at the planetarium.

Tickets are $4, but $3 for children under 12.

Tickets are available 30 minutes before showtime or can be purchased in advance at the Impact Center Office, Monday through Friday, 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.

Día de los Niños This Weekend at Mooney Grove Park!

The Tulare County Office of Education (TCOE) is preparing for the its annual Día de los Niños/Día de los Libros event scheduled for Saturday, April 27, in Mooney Grove Park.

Día is a partnership between TCOE and the County of Tulare, Visalia Parks and Recreation and the Tulare County Public Library.

This free literacy event will features nationally-known authors, book giveaways, young performers and community resources.

The authors include Margarita Engle, a national Newbery Honor winner and author of The Surrender Tree, The Poet Slave of Cuba, Tropical Secrets, The Firefly Letters and The Wild Book. Ms. Engle will be joined by Harjot Singh, Thien Pham and local author Virginia Pilegard, who is well-known for her Warlord series of books.

Educational Resource Services is coordinating the Día event, scheduled for 1:00 - 4:00 p.m.
